Capturing love between families is one of my favorite things to do. I have known Alan, Julie and Avin for a long time and was thrilled when they asked me to photograph their 2011 Family Portrait in San Francisco. I have seen them grow from a newly wed couple to a beautiful family of three. This is actually the second time I have photographed the family – the first was when Avin was just a few months old. It’s always really neat for me to be able to photograph people at different stages of their lives. One of the benefits of living here in the San Francisco Bay Area is that there are so many great places to photograph families. Alan, Julie, Avin and I headed out to the woods above Lake Merced not far from Stonestown shopping center for these pictures. I loved the location as Avin was able to run around and have fun while I caught up with Alan and Julie and got to observe them just be a family. During the editing process of these images I was really moved – I could feel the love between them. I’ve always made it my goal to transfer the story of the heart to the camera, to capture images that reach deep into the heart of a family, to draw out the love between them and bring a smile and a tear. I believe that if I can capture the heart, I can provide my clients with memories that last a lifetime. Memories that remind them exactly how they felt at that moment, so that 10, 20 or 30 years from now they can look back and not only see, but also feel that time in their lives. It’s more than a picture, its a snapshot of the love between a family – the love of a father and son, the love between a husband and wife, the love of a mother, the love of parents, the wonder of a child. This is why photography is so important to me – its the magic of love preserved, moments in time that tell the story of the heart.
